GLOBAL HEALTHCARE STRATEGY

News Digest January 2024

A curation of news stories impacting health insurance and brokers, population health management and health tech from last month.

It must have been a frantic January for GBG, with the welcome news that many of the best bits have been saved, including the US-based education books (Bison, Crum and Forster), and much of the small UK/European and Asian business (MGEN/Trawick). Even in Lat Am, solutions have been found for Mexico (Axa) and ~1/3 of the book (Best Doctors) such that ~75% employees have kept jobs – in a transfer or as is – and ~80-90% customers are safe.

UnitedHealth gets ever bigger and Cigna’s strategy and leadership once again evolves, although little mention is made of International, and Bupa continues to stress its focus on prevention and the use of data.

Possibly the most interesting section this month is the benefits one, with some big moves from AXA, and radical insights from the well-respected Randstad survey and from WTW and Oxford University covering global standards and the low effectiveness of many workplace wellness programmes.

The new Tech entrants to health are hard at work ‘innovating’ – see what YouTube, Amazon and Samsung have been up to – and start to worry about the rise in Cyber attacks in Healthcare.

On that note, welcome to 2024 as it gets going.
